Curriculum

The Primary School Curriculum is a comprehensive framework that outlines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that pupils should develop across a range of subject areas during their primary school education.

The curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the diverse needs and abilities of all students. One of the key developments in recent years in the Irish Primary School Curriculum is the introduction of the new Primary Language Curriculum. This curriculum provides a framework for the development of language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Irish and English.

The  Primary Language Curriculum is based on a communicative and functional approach to language learning, it develops pupils’ ability to use language in real-life situations. It also emphasises the development of critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills through language learning.

The Primary Mathematics Curriculum  aims to foster a love of learning mathematics through engaging and playful experiences. It emphasises problem-solving, reasoning, and critical thinking skills, while also developing a strong foundation in number sense, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. The curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners, promoting mathematical understanding and confidence for future success.

In addition Primary Languages and Mathematics, the  Primary School Curriculum includes a range of other subject areas, including Science, Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE), Physical Education, Arts Education, and Religious Education.

The curriculum is designed to enable pupils to develop their knowledge and skills in each of these areas, while also promoting personal and social development.
